Network Design Principles – Part 1

Office Cabling Network CablingNetwork design principles determine the approach to integrating and deploying components, protocols, and technologies to build a network infrastructure for the purpose of attaining tactical or strategic business objectives.

This article will focus on the principles network designers must consider in the application of business, functional, or application requirements to meet technological requirements. These principles are interdependent, and creating an effective network design will require their architectural integration.

Reliable and Resilient

Reliable networks transmit almost every packet to the right destination in a timely manner. The converged networks of today must be very reliable because Care greatly dependent on IT services for attaining business objectives. To illustrate, a network outage may cost a business to lose hundreds of thousands of dollars.

A network must be capable of functioning without an intervening operator even when there is a component failure. Resilience is a crucial network design feature, and it is given the highest priority by today’s enterprises. In order to achieve high resiliency, networks must feature redundant components that will fill the roles of faulty components.

Modularity

Typically utilized in software development, modular design can be constructed from coding that makes up an application. A faulty module can be isolated from other modules and replaced without affecting the others. Moreover, adding more modules to this structure is possible when new features are needed.

A fundamental principle of a structured network, modularity allows the division of network architecture into several functional modules. Each module will serve a particular role in the network.

Research

Studies have found that an IT network’s construction c will spend 20% for acquiring hardware, while 80% is spent on operational costs. When a network is unable to isolate security breaches, system upgrades, or failures within the network, it will be deemed to lack the responsiveness needed for adapting to future business demands, such as having a fast network capable of scalability.

Part 2 will discuss Reliable & Manageable Scaling and Fault Isolation & Simplicity.
