Optimum Data Flow Via Structured Cabling

A structured cabling system is a strategic asset that promotes data flow and the sharing of IT resources across every department of a company. It carries the data of an organization, connecting people, technology, and systems.

A structured cabling system has a lifespan that is much longer than other components of IT infrastructure. When designed properly with future proofing, structured cabling can enable the expansion of a company over two decades.

The typical structured cabling system will be made up of six main components as defined by the EIA/TIA (Electronic Industry Alliance/Telecommunications Industry Association) and ANSI (American National Standards Institute) and summarized below.

1) Backbone Cabling

This component comprises the cabling between entrance facilities, and buildings as well as telecommunications and equipment rooms. Serving as the primary data conduit, backbone cabling conveys data between these buildings and areas.

2) Entrance Facility

This location is where the service provider’s cabling and equipment connects with the backbone cabling of your facility.

3) Equipment Room

This area provides the housing for equipment like mechanical terminations, routers, servers, switches, and PBX. An equipment room can either be the replacement for the telecommunications room or serve as separate housing.

4) Horizontal Cabling

Usually running horizontally beneath flooring or over the ceiling, horizontal cabling is comprised of cabling between the telecommunications room and the work area’s telecommunications outlets.

5) Telecommunications Room

This area provides the housing for termination equipment needed for connecting backbone and horizontal wiring. It should be located upon the floor it is serving. Ideally, rooms in a facility of several floors should vertically stacked for simplifying cable pathways.

6) Work Area

This location is intended to be an area for frequent cabling changes. It is made up of every component between the endpoint equipment and telecommunications outlet.
