Basics of Low Voltage Wiring for Businesses – Part 2

As discussed in Part 1, commercial buildings and facilities typically have audio, computer networking, HD video, network data, telephone, and Wi-Fi systems. Each can be individually supported by its own low voltage wiring network, which can be integrated, monitored, and controlled with the others under a single system. Part 2 will discuss Security and Workplace Communication Systems.

Security

For the prevention of crime and to help ensure the safety of your employees and guests, a security system is essential. The following discusses typical security system components.

Access Control – Entry into a building or certain areas of a facility can be controlled by utilizing biometric scanners, card readers, and pass code entry.

CCTV Surveillance – Closed-circuit television (CCTV) is made up of video cameras, digital recorders, and displays for monitoring areas of a building or facility.

Intrusion Detection – Made up of a network of door & window contacts, motion detectors, and other devices, this system is designed to help prevent unauthorized entries. It can be coordinated with monitoring services that notify security staff or police when sensors are activated.

Workplace Communication

Your management team will be able to promote teamwork and workplace communication as well as transmit important and urgent communications by using the low voltage sound and communication systems discussed below.

Audio/Visual – Workplace collaboration can be encouraged through the use of multimedia tools and software solutions, including cloud-based conferencing and enterprise social software.

Paging & Intercom – Delivering messages to individuals inside a large building is inefficient. Your employees can become more productive by implementing a paging and intercom system, which will be able to reach out wherever they are.

Mass Notification – In times of an emergency, such as a natural disaster or a person needing urgent medical care, time is precious. Installing a mass notification system will enable management to deliver instructions immediately to all employees and guests who are inside the building. Messages can also be sent to individuals who are offsite through the use of email, SMS, or prerecorded phone messages to mobile phones.
